Internationally, the year 2008 was dominated by the outbreak of the credit crisis, which caused a deep economic recession and led to major government interventions worldwide. Politically, the election of Barack Obama as the first black president of the United States was a historic moment. It was also a year of major sporting events, especially the European Football Championship and the Summer Olympics in Beijing. Computable.
In the Netherlands, the introduction of the smoking ban in the catering industry and the case surrounding Joran van der Sloot played a prominent role in the news. The Putten murder case also received new developments, and the Dutch government made a fresh start under the leadership of Chamber President Van Rompuy.
In terms of technology, the most important developments in 2008 were the rise of cloud computing, social software and augmented reality. The launch of the Android operating system by Google marked the beginning of a new era in the mobile market.
Dagboekfragmenten
2-10-2008 Somewhere on the train between Delft and Schiphol. The time has come, Mar and the children have been kissed and I am on the train for the big adventure. We take off in 3 hours and then I can't go back, even if I didn't want to. I see Annemarike at a meeting point. Last emailed for all the important things and hopefully she can shake it all loose as well. Uma has said she doesn't want me to go and she probably really feels bad about it, but she can't express it properly either. Luuk has accepted it and will deal with Mar. Furthermore, we will see when I get back what impact it actually has on them.

2-10-2008 "We were able to check in on time and then waited on the plane for almost 50 minutes to depart. Despite apologies and repeated mention of the expected departure time, no reason was given for the delay. The plane was disappointing and the expectations that KLM created were not met. Our special vegetarian moon time was accidentally given to our neighbors at the back, so we got both the chicken and beef menu (rendang). Chicken was something vague with rice and carrots and the rendang with green beans. The meat was not tasty with either dish, so we mainly ate the vegetables.
After a wonderful night (turned 100 times, parts of my body falling asleep without me being there) we arrived in Seoul.”

3-10-2008 "A bus to Insadong and after some doubt which exit to take. At Anguk we quickly found Seoul guesthouse. Turns out we had a living room in addition to a bedroom. There was internet, air conditioning, television and a refrigerator. It sounds very luxurious whatever it is, but the space was not really that great, although the room was very large. The bathroom was low (fortunately we are small and it just fits).
Now we are in a room that is great in terms of space, but has a doubter in it. I'm now lying on the floor on some blankets and my mat writing, which isn't very easy, so I'm going to sleep.”

October 4, 2008 To the nuns in Incheon and that was quite strange. Tsi Chiang was our interpreter and luckily she also speaks Dutch. Meet at Seoul Station. I didn't want to give her the gift for Hoya, so we first had to go to the student district looking for GOAL, then coffee and a sandwich and finally a couch, but we didn't make it anymore. We arrived at Seoul Station about half an hour before time and luckily Tsi Chiang was there too. Fortunately, Incheon is an hour away and during that time we got acquainted and chatted a bit. Our arrival at the nuns had not been announced and apparently our traffic jam (of May and me) was not on location, but elsewhere. The orphanage we originally stayed in is no longer there and it was not clear where the files were located. In any case, she couldn't just reach it... It didn't make me much wiser. Then back to Seoul Station. Wandered through streets with a market and ate delicious watermelon and pachon at a stall. In the evening we had a Korean dinner at the Chinese restaurant and went to the river for fireworks.
I notice that I am still thinking about how I should be towards Koreans in my opinion. And that I'm not nearly as relaxed as I could be. Too busy with the division into two. While it has long been clear that I am Dutch.
(Hopefully I can find it here in Seoroksan.) Besides the hustle and bustle of Seoul, maybe it also has to do with Seoul. The hectic pace, so many people, faces. Kind of overstimulation of impressions, especially people. The hassle with the orphanages also does not promote coherence.
Let's do a bit of puzzling and pray that tomorrow it will be dry and we can walk...

5-10-2008 Later today, out of bed, breakfast, lunch in one of the palaces (City Hall), walked around. Museum for contemporary art, Latin America, riverbed (beer), street festival drinks at the top, towards Anguk for mandu, but it was already closed. Ate bibimbap at Korean...

7 to 9-2008 Seoraksan
Arrived in Seoraksan today. It is wet and cold, but even with such weather conditions you can see that it is a beautiful environment.

8-10-2008 After a hearty breakfast with scrambled egg & bacon around 10 o'clock we left for the mountains. The day before we had stocked up on some provisions such as cookies, crackers, salty chips and smoked almonds. The sun was shining and the road was, in a word, breathtaking. The autumn colors shone exuberantly and the road was crazy with stairs, waterfalls and around every new corner a wonderful view, illuminated by a nice sun. We were going to walk a circle that day and had the opportunity to decide about 1/3 of the way to make an even longer circle. It was not the latter because it had already been dying for a few hours from the ascent. Of course, any weather is outweighed by a magnificent view. Around 4.30 pm it dawned on us that we still had to walk fast, but the constant ascent was not going well for me. The fog had now risen and we encountered fewer and fewer people. In the end, Annemarike was wise enough to say that we would walk back to the Hermitage when we had to do the last part, which would take at least 4 hours. This hermitage was 1.4 km and by now it was 6.30 pm and getting dark. That hour was the longest of the entire day. The Hermitage was below and the moon was difficult to see through the forest. Stumbling and slipping for an hour, until (almost at the last part) Annemarike turned on the light on her camera. Luckily we were able to see something first. The way to the hermitage was encouraging with the singing and music. When we finally arrived there (around half past eight), after waiting a while we were assigned a place to sleep in a women's room in a kind of former temple complex. Fortunately, they also had some seaweed soup, rice and a mixture of zucchini with cucumber, of course, mixed with sesame and gochuang sauce. After washing ourselves a bit (my face was super salty) at a large water basin, we went to sleep (8.15 pm!). Just before half past four in the morning we were woken up by ticking (alarm clock) and singing and a lot of women left (prayer? breakfast?). We fell asleep and I woke up around 6:15 am. Had breakfast with a melon and a cookie and then we were on our way. When I woke up I didn't think I could climb another flight of stairs, but it gradually got better. On top of the mountain we had breakfast with smoked almonds. After having walked for 15 minutes, Annemarike received a rice ball with kidney and black beans, mackerel and kimchi from a Guus Hiddink fan from Busan and we were also allowed to order soju (wisely!). One more 'koppi' and we were all set. The trip was incredibly beautiful and the weather even better. We were offered more food along the way, so we became increasingly happy and the idea that we had also spent a night in the forest disappeared like the proverbial 'snow before sun'. The trip was really great. We finally arrived back at the hotel around 2:30 PM where we had to explain that we wanted to stay another night... We had a nice shower and sat on the balcony to chat. Buy a beer and eat delicious food. Now I have to poop!
9-10-2008 What you have to do to have a view... I am now sitting on our balcony with green knees. The green comes from a cream against bruises, bruises, etc.
Afgelopen 2 dagen op Ullung-do geweest: eindelijk😉. After Seoroksan, where we had bought tickets in the afternoon and had a quick bite to eat (quickly, because they were closing), we went to bed on time to get up at 6.30 the next day and catch the bus to... (I forgot what the place is called again). There we posted the cards and provided them with stamps and took the bus to Donghae.

Then we made a funny taxi tour and the taxi drivers must have laughed wildly. We took off our backpacks and left them at the station. Then we took the taxi to the information desk in the center, where the lady of course did not speak English, but she was smart enough to call a colleague who did speak English. According to this colleague, a boat would go to Ullung-do. With a note in hand, we take the taxi back to the station from the boat. Picked up the backpacks and took the taxi back to the ferry terminal. Everything was deserted there and it became clear that no boat would go anymore. Then again by taxi to a hotel in the city. This time it was the Picasso hotel. A western style hotel with internet and a massage shower which was a bit tarnished. Spent the afternoon hanging around the city. Drank 'coffee' high up in a building and ate a sandwich in a park. We of course had a very nice meal there (accidentally found a great restaurant). A large bowl with all kinds of mushrooms and vegetables, a kind of stew. Drank soju for the first time that evening and went to sleep on time. The next day we got up early to be on time for the boat. Annemarike was not feeling well, along with some passengers who were vomiting on a violently rocking boat.

11-10-2008 to 13-10-2008
We arrived around 12 and were indeed swamped by older women who wanted to take us to a min box. We sat in the harbor for a while and then took a taxi to Jeodong Ri, a village next door. We walked confidently to the nicest mini box, where there turned out to be no one. After walking back and forth a bit and calling in the sauna neighbor, it turned out to be full. The woman was kind enough to take us to another one, but everything turned out to be full. Finally, after a number of attempts, we found a place to sleep in the Kaiserhotel. After installation we went for a walk towards a lookout post, which turned out to be a strange trip.
Writing doesn't work at all and maybe I shouldn't try anymore. Perhaps it is better to work with keywords and write about them at home. Ullung-do: food, girl takeaway English, fresh noodles, boy American Pohang. Bus around the island, Nari basin, yak across the island, eat in Dodong Ri, taxi ride back with 3 adult men. Home early, beer and great discussions. Packing, ferry terminal backpacks, trip along the coast to the lighthouse. Before that Annemarike had breakfast and got a lot of attention from older men. A peaceful trip to Pohang by boat.

Upon arrival by boat it was dark and around a quarter past 6. With the taxi and driver with blow-dried hair looking for S-motel. This is supposed to be a motel near the train station. Spent highest amount on a taxi (+60,000 won) and finally he dropped us off at S motel. At the ferry it was already doubtful whether he knew and the telephone number in the LP also turned out to be incorrect. We ended up (turned out) in a place with all kinds of love motels and we are. We visited a number of them and (unfortunately) did not look at any photos taken because of the surprise (revolving beds, bathtub on very kitschy legs). Ended up in a simple, cheap yogwan, but good for 1 night.
Finally we ended up in a cafe where we ate a lot of beer and too much fried chicken and also had a discussion about 'our friendship'.

14-10-2008 Next day we traveled to Busan with KTX. Both accommodations were located at the train station. Another view of the city a little further after the 1e to go back, which turned out to be a nice place. In the afternoon I did the laundry and chatted a bit in the hotel. In the evening we had dinner in a small tent where we got a kind of stewed pot with some vegetables and pork bone pieces and pieces of fat, which turned out to be pieces of pasta. There was also a market and a large supermarket. Bought delicious cucumber, tomato and yoghurts so that we had a nice breakfast the next day.

15-10-2008 Ate a delicious baguette at the Beomosa temple. The temple was busy with praying (mainly) female believers.
Photo geumjong 1 to 7
Then we made a half-circle of the geumjong (or something like that) wall via the north gate. A beautiful walk that my knees did not appreciate. Beautiful views of Busan and where you could also see the vastness clearly.

At the south gate we wanted to be described Lonely Planet (LP). The description is crazy, but 2 gentlemen with drinks were kind enough to go before us. And we went down in a rush of blood. Then we had to climb a steep, concrete road, where I arrived, puffing, at the most beautiful and special temple I have ever seen: Seokbulsa. Unfortunately it was almost 6 o'clock and the female monk allowed us to take a look, but the grumpy monk (also a woman) eventually made us leave through a small door because another couple came puffing away.

Toeristeninformatie mevrouw: you go now. Kyobo boekhandel meisjes (hi, hi) warenhuizen af. Uiteindelijk Kyobo kaart gevonden. Medicinale en ricecake street. Binnen geproefd, Bruiloftsgasten ’s avonds eten in Italiaans restaurant.

19-10-2008 Next day towards Hahoe.
